Practically all the books I've read over the past few years have been YA novels, but since I'm starting university soon and I'm now older than nearly all the YA protagonists, I'd love to hear some recommendations for some good books with protagonists in the 18-22 age range, because I can't find many books like that online that seem interesting. As for genres, I mainly like adventure, fantasy, sci-fi, and coming-of-age type books, but I'm pretty open to others if there's something that sounds good.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell has a protagonist in a coming-of-age entertaining collage, it’s a good book generally recommend it.
There’s two series, ‘Throne of Glass’ and ‘Court of Thorns and Roses’, by Sarah J. Maas that are absolutely amazing!!! It is a YA adult novel, but the main characters in both books are 19~20ish. It’s fantasy, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I WOULD RATE INFINTY OUT OF FIVE STARS!!!
In The Lunar Chronicles, the MCs range from 16 to 25, and they're all amazing!!
Any of the classics or classics with a twist, especially if you're majoring in philosophy or literature. And if you reference them in papers you will likely get extra marks. Some of my favourite classics are 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde, 'Macbeth' by Shakespeare, and 'The Strange Case of Jekyll and Hyde' by Robert Louis Stevenson. My absolute favourite classic with a twist is 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' by Seth Graeme-Smith, I absolutely adore this novel although I'm not so keen on the sequels.
Oooh, on a Shakespeare note:
A Midsummer Night's Dream: it has a love square, fairies, magic curses, pranks, and humor, and was likely written on drugs.
Hamlet: Murder, depression, procrastination, and humor!!
Much Ado About Nothing: the original snark couple, faked deaths, humor!
I love 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', it was the first thing I read of Shakespeare's and in my English lit class we acted out scenes of it.
I was in Sock Puppet Hamlet as Laertes and Midsummer Night's Dream as Oberon (favorite role!!!! I got to wear a cape and a crown of leaves and antlers and carry an awesome staff!)
Yeah, my school ran out of theatre guys, they all graduated the year before Dream.
I wrote an essay on Helena versus Hermia for my exam and got an A. I have no clue how though.
I also recommend 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak, the characters are a little too you to be YA but the story damn well made me cry.
The Muse Chronicles by David P Jacobs. It's only 2 novels, a third on its way. The MC is already married, I forget how old but 100% at a proper age to be.
