Lifespans and birth rates

Cognitive species are defined by their ability to learn and understand other species and make use of the world around them.

Phoenixes are the largest species with the longest life span but lowest fertility rate. Only a handful of phoenixes exist and they are a solitary species meeting another of their kind twice in their life time. They procreate once in their life and that significantly decreases their longevity so they typically only procreate when they reach the end of their life. They will then spend the last centuries of their life raising their fletchling into maturity.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Farries are the smallest species with the shortest life span and highest fertility rate. Lay eggs that are then nurtured by the surrounding flora and protected by the parents. Farries live in large hives (groups of farries) deep within forest.

Dragons are the second largest species with the second largest life span. They have a low fertility rate with 1:3 whelp eggs laid will hatch.

Dwarves are the second smallest species with the third largest life span with the third lowest fertility rate. Very taxing on female dwarves to give birth and may take years to conceive. Dwarves are solitary species that typically live either alone or in small familial groups. Only live in large communities when ill, giving birth, dying, or have lost their family before reaching maturity.
