Chapter 07: Ace in the hole

At night, Corbin and Kiara entered into a recreation center. "So where's this guy supposed to be?" asked Kiara. "He said he'd be over by the darts area." They walked over to the area and saw a man with red hair dressed in green and white. "Hey. You must be the guy, right?" asked Corbin. The man turned around and saw Corbin and Kiara. "You two must be the ones who contacted me." "That's right. If you've got any juicy details, you need to spill ASAP." said Kiara. "In that case, follow me. I'd prefer we take this conversation elsewhere." The man, Corbin, and Kiara left and went into their respective cars. The man drove to an apartment and the two agents followed behind.

He took them to his apartment but walked towards a back alley. Corbin and Kiara followed him while confused at his actions. He then turned around and fired a light blue energy bolt at Corbin who dodged. "What the? What's your problem?" asked Corbin. "Nothing. I just want to see what you can do." Caesar fired a beam at Corbin who blocked with darkness. Corbin fired multiple dark bolts that Caesar blocked by creating an energy aura. A small blue orb appeared in front of Corbin and blasted his leg. He stumbled, allowing Caesar to close the distance and deliver a punch to his face.

Corbin recovered and delivered many punches and kicks that Caesar blocked. He delivered a right hook that Caesar caught. Corbin punched his face and proceeded to deliver many more blows before Caesar dodged and backed away. Caesar fired a concentrated blast at Corbin, who blocked it. Caesar simultaneously created small orbs that surrounded Corbin and fired energy beams at him. Utterly surprised, he surrounded himself in a dark aura at the last second to block them all. Kiara was amazed by Corbin's new display of power. Corbin himself couldn't believe it. "Alright. That's good enough for me. Let's go."

They went inside his apartment, which looked relatively clean but overall low-income. They went into the living room and all sat down. "I'm sure you're aware of the two casinos Pardus wants to take control of, right?" asked Corbin. "There's no way I can't be. He constantly brags about his achievements to me."

"Why does Pardus want to take over these two casinos?" asked Corbin. "Hold on a second. Always make sure your sources are reliable. How do you even have knowledge of this guy?" asked Kiara. "That's because we used to be best friends." Corbin and Kiara's eyes widened. "Wait, what? Seriously?" asked Corbin. "In that case, what does he look like?" asked Kiara. "He is of Haitian descent, 6'3, with half-up dreads." "Not exactly an indistinguishable appearance. What do you think? asked Kiara. "He's telling the truth. Everything he's saying sounds natural with no fear or hesitation and he seems relaxed to tell us."

"The reason he wants to take over those two casinos is because my father couldn't. My father was a respectable man. However, the casino owners didn't want to associate themselves with an infamous criminal. They figured it wouldn't sit right with their consciences. All you need to know is that Cain has a bone to pick with me." "Why's that?" asked Kiara. "Basically speaking, he claimed he could run my father's business better than him and I told him it wasn't possible. He threw a hissy fit and vowed to take control one day. I didn't take him seriously until one day, I found myself as his janitor. Now he's going to take over the casinos so he can upstage my dad and gain the respect from his colleagues. If he does that, he'll be unstoppable."

"Is he a Dominant or Recessive Magian?" asked Kiara. "Dominant. He can control his own bones. They can either protrude from his body like spikes or form weapons." "Any weaknesses?" asked Corbin. "His bone constructs require the use of the calcium in his body. If his bones are detached, he completely loses the calcium. Cain is a difficult person to face. He prefers to let his lackeys do his dirty work. Just like how he took over my dad's Mafia."

Flashback to several years ago when Crocodile, Gilroy, and all the enforcers walked into Rossi's office. His two guards were about to fire, but Scarecrow instilled great fear in them while Clockwork raised his hands, surrounding them in a yellow energy that incapacitated them. "Such weak spirits. I honestly question how these worthless buffoons weren't fired." said Clockwork. Crocodile walked up to his desk and stared Rossi down. "You don't know who my boss is, but he definitely knows who you are and he'd love to have your organization." "Judging by what your men did, I can tell you're very serious. And if I refuse?" "Then have fun burying your son." "What did you say?" "Hand over your mafia or Caesar dies, wop." "You couldn't." "Really? Don't you think it's a little strange that all your Dominant Magian soldiers are dead?" Rossi had a look of concern and confusion on his face. "Hi. Name's Zoocreeper and I'm the one who did the deed. With my Factor, I was able to poison them without them even knowing it. All it took was a Magian scanner and it was like breathing." "So you're the disease that's been killing my Ragazzo off." "Exactly. But I'm willing to let Caesar live as long as you give me your company."

"And that's how it all happened." said Caesar. "What a despicable man. He truly is among the worst scum on Earth. But even then, why exactly should we help you? If we take down Cain, you'll just take over for your father, won't you? You'll just be another criminal who takes advantage of the weak." said Kiara. "And? All my father did was illegal gambling. The people who show up are the ones damning their own souls. That's the thing about people: They have sin and vice practically written in their DNA. If it can't be stopped, it should at least be controlled. Besides, it's not as if my father just sat on his money. He loved his community and wanted to see it thrive. That's why he always donated a tenth of what he had. You're more than welcome to have a problem with me, but between me and Cain, I'm the better option." said Caesar.

Kiara glared at Caesar with her arms crossed. "Fine. Where's Cain right now?" asked Kiara. "He's at the Seaboard Marine with another criminal. "Another criminal involved? Alrighty then. Let's go." "Hold on. This other criminal is quite danger-." said Caesar. "That just makes it all the more exciting. Come on, Ombre." interrupted Kiara.

Cain and Crocodile were at a shipping dock meeting a man and woman. "I fail to understand why I couldn't bring any of my men around." said Cain. "That's because I'm less interested in your men and more in you. I allowed your underboss to come since he has almost as much authority as you. I don't even see why you'd even need them around." said the woman. "I'm in unfamiliar territory and my Mafia's being reduced at a constant rate. I want to ensure I'm not next on the chopping block." said Cain. "Well, I suppose I can understand. After all, these white contacts and mask are only because my appearance is far too distinct." said the woman.

"What do you want?" asked Crocodile. "There's a device that's nearing its completion being made by Cypress Industries. We want you to use your resources and get it for us." said the woman. "And how do you know that?" asked Cain. "Insider. Now then. If you can pull this off, we'll be in your debt. Otherwise, we'll kill you." said the man. "Having people like you in my pocket would be a nice advantage to have. Plus, I don't want to die. Alright, fine. When do you want it?" asked Cain. "Well, I'm not necessarily in a rush to get it. However, for the sake of motivation, I'll need it by the end of next month." said the woman. "Please, why should we be scared of you? We have an ex-Commodore in our pocket. In case you don't understand, a Commodore is the highest rank in the Convocation. He could easily take you guys down." said Crocodile. "Judging by your language, it sounds like you only have one at your disposal. Your boss just said his Mafia's being reduced at a constant rate. Are you sure you want to send your one Ex-Commodore to fight all of us?" asked the man. Crocodile backed down. She and the man both disappeared.

Kiara was driving as quickly as she could. Corbin received a text from Caesar. "I wonder what kind of person Cain's dealing with." said Kiara. "I'm not sure. He's probably a dangerous person." Kiara focused on the road with a determined smile on her face. Corbin glanced and became concerned. "Don't you think you're getting a little too excited?" "Hey, you know the old saying. Find a job you love, and you'll never work a day in your life." "Caesar texted me saying that Crocodile's gonna be there as well." "Goodie. That gives you a chance to finish what you started." "But I'm worried. Don't you think this is too much for you to handle?" "Like I said before, you don't need to be worried for me."

As they parked the car, Corbin was about to take off his seatbelt, but Kiara put out her hand to stop him. She created a sail swallowtail and lowered her window, allowing it to escape. "Ok, this is weird. Not only is the figure gone, but Cain and Crocodile are alone." "Well, I guess it makes sense that criminals aren't the kind to look after each other. Regardless, this makes our job easier." Corbin and Kiara got out of the car and showed up towards the boss and underboss. She took out her gun and aimed at Cain.

Cain looked at Kiara and started to recognize her. "Hey, Zoocreeper said that Kiara was a tall woman with red hair, right? So this is the bitch responsible for crippling my business." "Wait, you know who I am?" "I do. And you don't need to concern yourself with how." he said. She fired many times at him, but he dodged them all. "Hey, Croc. Remember me? I think it's time I pay you back for that defeat." said Corbin. "I can't believe you want to fight me for such a childish reason. Unfortunately, I guess I've no choice but to indulge."

Crocodile's arm turned swampy and he launched vines towards Corbin. Unwilling to be at the mercy of those vines, Corbin created a darkness aura to protect himself from being strangled. Crocodile turned into a swamp monster and fired pellets of mud from his mouth that Corbin blocked. "Ha. It seems my aura halves the potency of your attacks." said Corbin. Crocodile stopped and used vines to tangle Corbin and reel him closer. Corbin destroyed the vines before they could move him. "That power seems to be really useful for you." said Crocodile. "Yeah. To tell you the truth, it was during our first fight that I thought about using this power. Unfortunately, I wasn't exactly sure how I'd be able to use it, but something happened today that brought it out. And it's gonna help me defeat you!"

Kiara closed in on Cain with her fists covered in bioelectricity. She tried punching him, but he kept dodging. He grabbed her hair but let go once he felt shocked. "You think you're the first criminal to try and grab my hair? I can at least say you're the one who tried earliest." Kiara uppercut him and blasted him with bioelectricity. He rolled up his sleeve and blocked with a bone shield on his arm but could still feel the shock. He retracted his shield and ran behind a shipping container. Kiara created a white-tailed deer to track him down. However, he was nowhere to be seen. Kiara felt something off and rolled, avoiding a stab attempt by Cain from behind.

Corbin surrounded the area between him and Crocodile in a dome of darkness. He charged up his fist with dark energy and attempted to punch Crocodile in the stomach. To his surprise, Crocodile released water and mud from his hands, making Corbin slip and fall. "Are you surprised? I'm a swamp monster. It wouldn't exactly make sense if my senses were the same as a standard Magian. Seems that new aura doesn't stop you from falling. Now let's see how long it lasts." Corbin rolled himself out of the way of being slammed by Crocodile's fists, got up, and delivered a blast from both hands. Crocodile turned back into a human to avoid it, ran towards Corbin with a swampy arm, hurled mud with enough force to knock his head back, and started punching him repeatedly. He turned back into a swamp monster and used his vines to constrict Corbin. "That aura won't hold up forever. It's time I exterminated an instrument like you." "Is that really all you see me as?" "Don't complain. You chose to be a stooge for a corrupt system. This is just what you deserve."

Cain kept launching heavy, quick punches at Kiara who kept dodging them. She kneed his stomach, causing him to move back. She punched his face and then kneed it. He threw a backhand that she blocked with her arms. She fired bioelectricity that he dodged. However, the bioelectricity formed into a hawk that proceeded to dive bomb him from behind. However, he dodged at the last second, causing Kiara to get hit by her own bird due to not expecting it. He ran in with blades on his knuckles to punch her. However, she dodged and touched his back, shocking him.

Corbin destroyed the vines and created tentacles to constrict Crocodile. "Perhaps you should take this as a lesson that sometimes the evil you commit will be returned to you." Crocodile launched water and mud near Corbin that distracted him with a bad smell. He used the vines to push himself on top of a shipping container and fired water and mud pellets at Corbin. He kept dodging but found that doing so started to gain much more difficulty. He tried to run, only to slip on some mud. Crocodile jumped down to deliver a punch to Corbin, who rolled away and got up. He fired an energy beam that knocked Crocodile down, reverting him to human form. Corbin went to put cuffs on him, but Crocodile quickly got up and tried to slash him with a switchblade. Corbin dodged but felt pain on his neck. He touched it and saw that he was bleeding.

Cain created a big bone and smacked her leg as hard as he could, making her cry out in pain. He started to batter her with his bone before smacking her down to the floor. He threw it away, summoned three bones from his knuckles, and attempted to stab her in the chest. However, he was stopped by a force field of darkness. Corbin ran towards Crocodile and cut his face with a dark knife. Afterwards, he obscured the area with more darkness, grabbed Kiara, put her in the car, and drove away. She started to cough. "Don't worry. You'll be okay. I'm about to call Miekka."

At the lair, Kiara was on the floor and Natalia had flames on her hands. "Can you please cover her mouth?" "Why?" asked Corbin. "Just do it." After Corbin placed his hands on her mouth, she applied flames to Kiara's body, which caused her to scream. However, the injuries started to heal up. Kiara got back up and moved around a bit. "Weren't you just screaming bloody murder?" asked Corbin. "Yeah, but now all the pain is gone. Thank you so much!" said Kiara. She gave Natalia a big hug. "I'm really glad you two are alive. Still, I wonder who that other person was." "What I'm curious about is how we didn't see him. Surely, there's no way he could've left before the fight started." said Corbin.

At his bed, Cain was trying to sleep, but had great difficulty in doing so. He decided to dial the number of his benefactor. "There's no way you could've left before the fight started, so why the hell didn't you help us?" "I seriously doubt that's the right way to speak to someone who can end you at a moment's notice. They're your problem, not mine. Clean it up if it's so bothersome." said the figure. Cain hung up the phone with a scowl on his face. "Damnit! I can't believe I have to deal with this shit."
