"We thought we were prepared. Fifty men armed to the teeth. Dangerous men too. Cutthroats that had seen the worst of war. Could have held off a small siege if we really needed to. Maybe lose a few good men, but that came with the job. But losing over thirty wasn't part of our agreement. Whatever that thing was, that wooden, tar-covered behemoth, it hit us hard. Tore Danford right in half. Then it screamed. Not some earth ripping roar or guttural growl- I mean an actual scream, filled with rage and pain. We all knew what was in there after that. I think that made it harder to hold our weapons. Somewhere in that wooden giant was a human. And I don't care how hard you think you are but seeing the way that thing moved, knowing it was once a person, would turn anyone's stomach foul. Whoever was stuck in there wasn't human anymore. They were something else. Something wrong. A monster that shouldn't exist. Some of us wanted to run. Hell, some of us actually had lives to go back to. Then Bernard, a dumb little kid that couldn't have been over twenty, thought it was best to get the damn things' attention. Bernard came from a rich family. Or something like it. Always had these pricey trinkets on him. Sometimes even came with a toy that had a little more kick to it. Well, smart boy that he was, he thought he'd try taking the beast down himself. Had a cannon set up and everything. The big brute never paid him any mind as he did. Probably didn't even know where it was. And then Bernard fired his stupid toy and that's really when all hell broke loose. I've seen grapeshot tear through squads of fully armored soldiers like butter and they didn't so much as scratch that thing. I thought I've seen hell on the battlefield, but that thing proved me wrong. It tore through us like we didn't even matter. Crushed some under its weight, ripped others apart with its branches. Some stood their ground, but I sure as hell didn't. I ran, as far and as fast as my legs could carry me. Gods, I could still hear the screams as I fled with my tail between my legs. It's silent right now but I know, if I make it out of here alive, I'll never forget them. Probably won't have to worry about it for long though. Thing that big is bound to make an impact when it walks, and I sure as hell can feel the footsteps getting closer."
