When Kera was finished, Jonathan made himself some fresh coffee. As he waited, he looked around for the others, noting that it was just him and Kera in the galley. Where was everyone, or was this just a rather quiet day?
kera had noticed to but didnt bother to ask, she drank her tea and drew on her tablet "soo.." she asked with a bored tone
Jonathan snickered at her question. He had been wondering if she would strike up a conversation.
“I honestly have no idea what to talk about, but I do have a question. How did ya like the little glimpse of my systems? And how the fuck did ya get in past the initial walls and blockades anyway? I don’t know many people that can do that,”Jonathan replied.
He seemed genuinely curious.
“ my dad was a hacker for his crew, everything I know comes from him. Course, I have my own cards, but most of my tarot deck Is his. “ she explained “ and as for you systems, there were a good challenge, but there flashy and over confident, maybe even cocky. I bet if you tone it down I bit, I wouldn’t have seen the guardians tricks so easy. “
Jonathan nodded when she spoke of her father, then furrowed his brow in deep thought.
“Yeah, now that I think of it, it is too flashy, though I was also fucking with ya, so that made it even more obvious. A family friend, actually the hacker for my mother’s crew, got me into computers and hacking. One of his defense tactics is to be very… flashy, out there, whatever ya want to call it, but apparently it doesn’t work so well for me. Hmm… I’ll figure it out at some point. I’m always seeking ways to improve,”Jonathan replied, shrugging casually and chuckling.
He then noticed the coffee was done and poured it in his now empty thermos, fixing it how he liked it. Afterward, he rinsed the pot and filter out, just to be courteous.
Kera lit up in thought “ mothers crew… Jonny boy what the hell is your mothers name?!” She jumped up, happiness covering her face.
Jonathan blinked, bewildered by her actions.
“Um, she usually went by Captain Esmeralda May, but her real name was… I think, Jean or Jenna. I was a little kid when she told me, so I barely remember. And, to clarify, she raised me and Max, my older brother, up until we were about ten or twelve. I don’t remember what happened to her or the rest of the crew, including my father, after that,”he answered.
“ me too, my dad disappeared.. hold on a minute!” She said and raced to her room, storming out and holding a picture to Jonathan “ is this your mam?” She asked and pointed to the lady in the image
Jonathan watched her leave, then stared at the picture for a long moment, trying his best to remember what his mother looked like.
“Maybe? I’d have to think about a bit more. And, also, to clarify on the ages, I was the ten or twelve year old, or maybe eleven. Max was five years older than me. What is this picture?”he asked.
“ it’s a picture from my dad.. he gave it to me before he left. And I would have been two years older then you…. I used to run around that ship like it was nothing.. “ she said and her brows furrowed a bit, “ I followed keigo back here because he was the last one to see my father, so for the longest time I thought he did something.. but I’m trying to change that opinion and nothing, nothing at all seemed to point in a different direction untill you said your mom is missing too..”
(Lol. And backstory)
Jonathan stared at Kera blankly for a long moment, then looked back at the picture. His eyes then narrowed.
“W… wait a minute. I barely remember a girl. I was fucking terrified to talk to her, though I remember Max had a crush on her for whatever fucking reason. Was that you?”he asked.
“And, I get being suspicious, but Keigo doing something to your dad? Come on, look at the guy. He might be a fucking giant, but he’s got a heart of gold, for a pirate at the very least,”Jonathan added.
“ yeah but keigo has his.. moments..” she said and sighed “ yeah, I haven’t seen a older picture of max in a long while but I remember his fascination with me. And I seemed to fall for the one in the corner.. but that was a long time ago..” she said as she got more tea. Kera dropped her glass, holding the side of her head and whimpering “ f..fuck!”
Jonathan shrugged at the mention of Keigo’s ‘moments’, then sighed.
“I’ve got pics of Max. The most recent is two years ol… wait… what?”
Jonathan looked at Kera, not sure that he had heard her right, then saw her grab her head. He quickly texted Boris to bring his bag and some pain meds, then rushed over to support Kera, concerned.
Tears dripped from Kara’s eyes, her grip on the counter only tightened when Jonathan touched her. She heard Boris coming in but the migraine was only just starting to fade. The ringing of the gun shot filled her ears, bringing back memory’s.
Jonathan noticed how she tensed up more, but he continued to hold her, keeping her possibly collapsing along with trying to give some emotional support. He was out of his comfort zone like this, but he figured it would do more harm to let go than hold on.
Boris came in, looking around in confusion until he spotted the pair. He quickly approached, looking Kera up and down.
“Alright, sitting down would probably do you some good. And, if you can, tell me what’s going on, and if you’ve already taken any sort of meds,”Boris said.
“ tyanol about an hour ago and a fucking pounding migraine..” she managed to get out while trying to sit.
Jonathan helped Kera sit down, then stayed nearby, watching closely in case he needed to help.
“Yeah, Tylenol won’t do shit for a migraine. You allergic to Aspirin at all?”Boris asked.
“ don’t know, never tried. Just don’t give me coffee and I’m sure I’ll be fine. “ she said
Boris sighed.
“Fuck. I’m always wary of giving new medicine to folks. What about Motren?”he asked.
“ that I know for sure I’m not allergic to,” she said knowing the medication from her old medic.
Boris nodded, sighing in relief.
“Then you can take Aspirin. Motren is like Aspirin’s little brother,”he mentioned.
He then handed her two Aspirin pills and a glass of water.
“This’ll do for the moment.”
“ thank you.. “ she mumbled and took the medication. She looked to Jonathan, only hoping he’d forgotten about what she’d accidentally let slip.
“No problem,”Boris replied.
He then went to make himself a sandwich. He kept an eye on Kera, just in case, but he doubted anything weird would happen.
Jonathan smiled slightly at Kera, happy that her migraine had been taken care of, then looked at Boris.
“Thanks for helping out.”
“That’s what I’m here for,”Boris replied casually.
Jonathan snickered, then noticed Kera’s glass still on the floor. He picked it up, setting it on the counter, then wiped up anything that had spilled. Afterward, he went back to his waiting thermos of coffee.
He wasn’t sure what else to do besides sit there, and her words earlier nagged at him. Had he misheard, or had he not? And had she been honest? Did she, when they were all still kids, truly have a crush on him? What did that mean for them now? Did he dare even think about it?
Kera shook her head softly, Having done her own share of thinking. She made a small pot of tea and poured it into the cup “ pots yours..” she said softly to Jonathan as she walked to her room. Kera set her glass down and laid back down.
