Marianne knew from experience that 'tired' usually did not mean okay.
MARIANNE: Tired of what? And I'm fine.

(
…just gonna leave this here…)
Tired of being constant;u hungry and yet not being able to keep my food down.
Mare breathed in, out, trying to clear her head. She deleted the message.
Just tired of being tired.
(Lmao my friend loves that song)
Marianne knew she was over complicating the situation in her head, but she couldn’t help it.
MARIANNE: Anything I can do?
You're already perfect.
Mare yawned and, ignoring the blossoming guilt, texted Goodnight. See you tmr
MARIANNE: Ly, gnight
Throwing down her phone, she sank into her bed, chastising herself for being worried over something Mare obviously thought was nothing.
Mare switched off her phone and lay back down. She closed her eyes, relaxing every part of her body one by one, realising how exhausted she was. Within minutes, she was sound asleep.
(Skip?)
(yup.)
(next morning at school?)
(Sure)
Marianne leaned against the rough brick wall of the school, an open book propped up on her knee. It was difficult to read, though, what with her every thought focused solely on one thing and one thing only: Mare.
Mare sat up in her bed, blinking sleep from her eyes. A glance at the clock told her it was 7:35— which was 35 minutes later than she usually woke up. Swearing, she jumped out of bed, threw on a blue sweater, a black pleated skirt and her combat boots. She ran to the bathroom, swigged some mouthwash, splashed some water in her face and tied her hair up into a ponytail; then sprinted downstairs, shoved her books in her bag, grabbed her ballet bag and was out the door 10 minutes later.
She arrived at school, disheveled and tired, to find Marianne by the front door of the school.
Marianne glanced up, hearing footsteps, and was surprised to find Mare standing right in front of her. She jumped up. “Mare!” The other girl seemed exhausted. Disheveled and almost… drained? She hesitated, almost reaching out to hug Mare but suddenly unsure whether or not that would put them at risk of being found out.
Mare watched as Marianne brightened. She was about to reach out and hug her, but stopped herself. Mare bit her lip, trying not to feel hurt. She nodded in her direction and headed into the school.
“Wait— Mare!” Marriage scrambled to grab her things and run after, putting a hand on her shoulder to stop her. “I’m sorry— I didn’t know if— I’m sorry if I hurt you.” Yesterday afternoon had started out so amazing, with thee kiss… but now she was scared. Scared for Mare.
Mare shook her head, unabel to bring herself to break away from Marianne. "Don't worry about it," she said with a bright grin. She walked a little further to her locker and opened it, before starting to rummage through her books. "How was your evening?"
The grin on Mare’s face reassured her singnifucantly, but she was still very much on edge, though she tried to mask it. “It was fine. How about yours?” Something in her tone hinted at the fact that she would very easily find untruths. “I was worried about you.”
Mare shrugged, stuffing her ballet bag into her locker. "No reason to be. I just… needed to clear my head." Among other things, she thought guiltily to herself. It hurt to lie Marianne but she had no idea how she would react. And it wasn't a risk she was willing to take just yet.
Marianne’s bullshit-meter was spot-on, but she knew prying right now would get her nowhere and could end up hurting Mare. “Is your head clear now, then?”
"Clear enough." She closed her locker unnecessarily hard. She winced at the sound. "Um, I've got to get to class."
Marianne nodded, feeling a pang deep in her chest. “We have class together second period, see you then, I guess.”
Mare nodded and walked away. She ran a hand across her face, guilt blossoming in her chest. Marianne hadn't really done anything. Mare had no reason to be mad… and yet she was. What was wrong with her? She got to class ad took a seat at the front of the class.
