Vaughn opened his mouth to speak, when his phone began ringing. He reached across the counter and looked at the number, which he didn’t recognize. He glanced at Kaz before answering it. “Hello?”
“Vaughn!” A high pitched voice exclaimed. Ben?
“Ben? Hey buddy, what’s going on? Did your mom give you my number?”
“No, daddy did! He picked me up from school early today. He says he has a surprise at home, and he wants you to come see!” Ben continued happily, innocently.
Vaughn felt like the air was taken away from his lungs as his eyes widened. How? He killed that horrendous man. How the hell was he alive? “You’re Dad? Where are you now, Ben?”
“Driving home. We’re close though. Hey, when you come over, do you want to play that game again?” Ben asked. So innocent.
Vaughn had a look of terror on his face as he struggled to keep his words steady. “Yeah, okay, Ben. I’ll be over super quick, okay? Tell your dad I’ll be over there to see him.”
“Okay!” There was a pause, muffled words coming from the background. “He says I have to hang up now. Bye, Vaughn!”
“Ben, wait, don’t-“ Vaughn started in a panicked tone, but it had already hung up. He lowered the phone away from his ear, looking at it. He looked furious now, his hands shaking. “God dammit!” he shouted, throwing his phone to the ground wher it shattered against the tiles.
