(also, is she in the cafeteria?)
(She's at her locker)
(ack sorry, when you said 'pulled out her sketcbook' I envisioned her sitting at the cafeteria)
Phoebe's eyes finally caught on hair that resembled Elide's– and her heart froze. There was a guy right behind her, with his hands on her hips and his mouth lingering by her ear. Forcing her way to the other side of the hall, she placed a hand on his shoulder and attempted to push him away. "Elide? Are you okay?"
"Oi, watch it! We were just havin' a little fun, weren't we, Elide?" Matt smirked, one hand drifting slightly lower and Elide struggled in his grip, which tightened slightly.
"Get off me, I'm not interested."
Anger burned in Phoebe's stomach as she violently shoved Matt backwards. "F*ck off and leave her alone," she growled at him swatting his filthy hands away as he reached in again. "She's not yours to play with."
Matt shook his head with a laugh, "Why should I listen to you?" But he backed away, "We'll finish this later, Elide." He sent her a wink which sent Elide's stomach turning and she inched slightly closer to Phoebe as he walked to his friends and they walked away.
Phoebe immediately turned to Elide, worried eyes roving her face for any sign of– anything, really. "Are you alright? What did that asshole do to you??"
Elide released a breath, "I'm fine, Phoebe. He… he just kissed my neck, nothing terrible but it was uncomfortable… Thank-you for- for stepping in."
"It's no problem," Phoebe assured Elide quickly, giving her a hug. She pulled away, still scrutinizing the other girl's face. "I swear, I'm going to punch him the next time I see him."
Elide cracked a smile and placed her hand on Phoebe's cheek, "You don't have too. But if it happens again, by all means go right ahead."
Phoebe's eyes darted anxiously around the hallway, but everyone had already either filtered into the cafeteria or left school property by now. "Y-Yeah, I will. You can count on that."
Elide, noticing how anxious Phoebe had become, very quickly removed her hand and grabbed her bag and book, "We should get to lunch.." She muttered, wrapping her arms around herself.
"Yeah," Phoebe agreed, wishing she could put her arms around Elide again. "Sorry for– being so anxious," she murmured so that only she could hear.
Elide sighed a little, "It's fine… you don't have to be sorry."
Phoebe nodded wordlessly, leading Elide into the busy cafeteria. She spotted Matt at a table with his friends and immediately steered her 'friend' in the opposite direction until they reached their usual table. "Hey Phoebe, Elide," Jane greeted.
"Hi Jane," Elide gave the girl a small smile as she sat down, "How are you?"
"I'm good, you?" Jane spooned a small bite of curry into her mouth. Phoebe frowned slightly. "Where's Josh?"
Jane sighed. "Apparently, El's mom called the school, who called his parents, and how he's dealing with therapist shit."
"El? Therapist? Wh-What do you mean?" Elide asked, swallowing a thump in her throat.
Phoebe's hand flew to her mouth. "Oh my god. Oh my god." Jane nodded, evidently worried. "I know– he's not responding to my texts– he was crying when he left school."
Phoebe felt like she couldn't breath. "Oh my god." She turned to Elide, trying to figure out how to tell her everything. "Basically, we stayed up until 3 am one night giving Josh a pep talk– he was– he was going to kill himself, we talked him out of it. Normally, yes, telling an adult is a great idea. But Josh's parents are………………………………………………………………. not– good people. We have another friend– she broke her ribs, which is why she's away, her name is Elena. That night–"
Jane picked up where Phoebe had left off. "El panicked and tried to call a help line. Her parents heard and came in, they forced her to tell them everything– and her mom just called the school to let them know, who told Josh's parents, which is only worsening his already terrible condition."
Elide gasped, "My stars… th-that's terrible. How can- that's… gosh…" She didn't have any words to express how she was feeling. She knew she might not be able to understand on the level that they did but she felt awful.
(real talk I've been the Phoebe in this exact situation)
Phoebe bit her lip, panic bubbling up inside her. "What do we do?? Have you tried calling??" Jane nodded frantically. "He's not picking up. I don't know what to do– I'm freaking out– we've got to do a check on him tomorrow. To make sure– you know."
(Wow… I'm sorry about that. I haven't personally but have a 'friend' who has)
"Breath, guys. Breath," Elide knew panic all too well and it didn't get you anyway, "I- Panicking is not going to help anybody… trust me."
(I'm sorry about your 'friend' too)
Phoebe nodded and did her best to calm down. "Right, right. Okay, to-do list. Get in touch with Josh. I'll text him all night if I need to. Tomorrow, check his arms."
Elide swallowed again and looked down to her lap, badly wanting to take Phoebe's hand in hers, "It'll work itself out…" She said quietly.
Phoebe and Jane both nodded and swallowed simultaneously, and Phoebe was so incredibly exhausted that she barely registered herself leaning against Elide's shoulder. Jane's eyes darted between the two, a question.
