Zavian had continued to walk in late and out early, Jay behind him, for the rest of the week leaving Fern all the work. It was a few days before the project was due- and Zavian knew it. Yet, he still walked through the halls, laughing and joking. Until the principal caught them. This time, he took them back to class, practically dragging them by the ear. "I've heard that you've been skipping a class in which you have a big project." He opened the door, motioning them back in. "In you go. One more catching and I call home." They surrendered and walked in.
Fern barely glanced up as she worked on the project, angry at him for abandoning her.
Zavian laughs. "Feisty!" He continues to chew his with emphasis as he sits down and leans back. "So, how close are we to finishing?"
Fern glared at him. “Only halfway done, no thanks to you,” she snapped. “Normally I might’ve gotten farther but I’ve been so busy lately. So are you going to actually help me now that you’ve finally been caught?”
He pretended to think for a moment. "Uh, I'll think about it." He sat up. "When is this due again?" If they were truly behind, they wouldn't have enough time to work on it in class.
“Next Monday,” she replied. “That’s not very far away, wise guy. And in case you haven’t noticed, it probably won’t be done unless I work my ass off all weekend and probably not even then. It’s not only my grade that’s gonna suffer, though I doubt you care about that.” She sighed. “Whatever. It’s not like you’re the first one to do this to me.”
A twinge of guilt hit and he quickly pushed it away. "Daaaannng! Okay, I get it, we don't like each other." He smirked a little. "You don't have to act like that. Look, if we don't have enough actual class time, then you'll just work on it at home, right?"
Fern looked into his eyes with an annoyed frown. “Yes, if we don’t get it finished, I’ll do the work,” she said, feeling a twinge of hurt. She thought he might at least offer to help out that way, but she was just getting her hopes up again. “But will you at least help me out during class now?”
He looked straight into her eyes, smirk still present. "And if I don't want to?" The voice rang in his head again. Jerk.
Fern sighed. “You don’t have to,” she muttered, trying not to cry like an idiot. She already felt stupid. “It’s fine. Whatever.” Her voice regained its edge. “See if I care. I do this all the time.” But that didn’t mean she enjoyed it.
"Fine." He could feel the guilt in the pit of his stomach. He sat up in his seat. "What exactly do you want me to do?" The bell rang. Shoot. The class began to shuffle out, but he stayed in his seat looking to her.
Fern sighed. “Never mind. It’s fine,” she said quickly, standing up. She just wanted to forget about this stupid assignment for a moment, and especially this boy.
"Hey!" He stood up quickly as well. "I'm trying to help for once!" For once. "Look, we don't have really any time. I just need to know what to do!"
“Okay, then, do you think you could edit the script and help me with the ending?” She asked, her features softening a bit as she handed him several sheets of paper stapled together.
"I, uh." He reluctantly took them. "Sure. Do we have enough time to work on it in class?" He glanced around to see if anyone was watching. Jay had left him.
“Maybe…” Fern replied. “But not today. I have to get to pre-calc.” She gave him a quick smile as she shoved her pencil into her bag.
He sighed. "Okay." He turned around and started to the door. He almost opened his mouth to apologize, but he ueld hod tongue. Jay was leaning against the wall not to far. He walked to him. "She buggin' ya?" He smirked as tuey walked away, past their next class.
Fern frowned when she saw Jay and walked quickly away to her next class, relieved and a little bit surprised that Zavian had offered to help, not to mention grateful. But she was still not too happy with him for ditching her in the first place, or for being rude.
(Shall we skip to the day where they have to work at home?)
Yeah sounds good. You mind starting?//
(Sure!)
The bell was going to ring any minute. "So, how is this going to work?" He had tried to help his best- well, not really, but he was there, which wass different for once. "Are you just going to work on it? Or what?"
“Well it’s Friday, and the assignment is literally due Monday so we’re going to need to work at home,” she explained tiredly. “I’ve done everything I could but I need your help.”
"Soooooo, then what?" Two minutes. He could hear Jay a few seats away, complaining and giving all the work to his partner. Is that what I sound like? He pushed the thought away. "Do we, like, work on it at a place or something?" He didn't really have any experience with working out of school- or in school for that matter.
Fern raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, we work on it at a place,” she said. “We could use my house…wait, never mind. My dad is having some football party or something. So we’d have to come up with somewhere to film it, because that’s the majority of what we have left.” She felt a little bit hopeless, since it was kind of obvious that Zavian wasn’t used to actually working on any sort of project.
