Fern’s face flushed, but she tried to act like she didn’t know what he was talking about. “What thing?” She asked, confused and a bit disgusted (at Jay).
Fern’s face flushed, but she tried to act like she didn’t know what he was talking about. “What thing?” She asked, confused and a bit disgusted (at Jay).
"A little bit of this…" Jay placed his hands on the desk in front of her, leaning in closer. "And a little bit of this…" He moved his face an inch away from hers. "Jay," Zavian came up behind him, placing his hand on his shoulder pulling him away. Jay pulled back to turn to Zavian, a confused smirk filling his face. "What's up? Are you actually into this goody-two-shoes?" Zavian could only sigh. "Come on, Jay."
Fern really did glare at Jay then, not understanding why Zavian could stand him. Her face was blotchy red, and her heart was beating fast from nervousness but she hoped that Jay couldn’t tell, because that would just make it worse.
"Zave, are you serious?!" Jay smirked, laughing with a slight push to his shoulder. Zavian hesitated. "I-" Jay cut him off. "Then you shouldn't have a problem with this." Jay went back, leaning in, this time closing the gap between his and her lips, breaking away a few moments later. He bit his lip while staring inti her eyes, Zavian just standing there in shock. As Jay broke away, he snapped back. "Jay, dude, stop." He pulled him back.
Fern blinked, not only anxious now, but angry and a little bit scared. “Leave me alone,” she snapped, folding her arms across her chest. She backed away from him.
Jay backed away, putting his hands up in surrender. "What do you say, Zave? Get out of this class?" Zavian stood there, looking to Fern. "Zave. You're joking, right?" "I-" he couldn't believe his hesitation. "Come on." Jay headed to the door, not waiting for Zavian. He didn't have to. He turned to Fern, whispering something only she could hear. "I'm sorry." With that, he left the classroom.
Fern tried to ignore the hurt pulsing inside her, but it remained nevertheless. Her heart throbbed as she watched him walk away, wishing that he would stop pretending to be someone he wasn’t. She wanted more than anything to run up behind him and kiss him, but she managed to stay put. Her friends began talking to her, but she didn’t really hear much of what they said.
As they went a little away from the classroom, Zavian snapped. "What the heck was that, Jay?!" He pushed him to the wall. "That was a real jerk move you did." Jay once again put his hands up in surrender. "Hey, I thought you weren't into her. I wouldn't have done it if I had known." Zavian grabbed a hold of his collar. "It wouldn't matter whether I did or not! You don't frickin go around kissing girls against their will!" A sky smirk crept onto Jay's face. "Isn't that what you did to her a few days ago?" Jerk. The word rang though his head again, this time, he was almost acutely aware of how much of one he was. He let Jay go and walked off, not sure if he was skipping class or just skipping Jay.
Fern bit her lip to keep herself from crying. She rushed out of class as soon as the bell rang, glancing around to look for Jay or Zavian, hoping they weren’t still hanging out together.
Zavian would have left school if he didn't need to talk to Fern so badly. To say he's sorry, as if it was going to do anything. Of course, he turned back at the last minute, originally thinking she wouldn't want to see him, maybe she still didn't. He wasn't too sure of anything. The bell rang, and something inside of him snapped. Jay.
Jay had been waiting outside of the classroom until the bell rang. He saw Fern frantically leave and grabbed her by the wrist. "Where you going there, Missy?"
Fern tried to yank her hand away from him. “What is your problem?” She demanded, glaring. “Do you really not have anything better to do than mess with people?”
He tightened his grip on her wrist, not letting her slip away. "Not really." He smirked more, pulling her closer.
Zavian was just down the hall, unaware of exactly what was going on, just that he needed to get to Fern.
She used her other hand to slap him in the face. “Let go of me!” She cried, getting more panicked but still trying not to show it.
Jay kept his grip, his other hand touching the side of the face she slapped. "Let's not make a scene, shall we?" He pulled her through a door of an empty classroom, not going to have anyone in it.
"Fern!" Zavian ran full blast to get to her, everything inside of his rushing with fear.
She tried again to extricate herself from his grip. “Why are you doing this?” She asked, seething, as she continued to try and escape. She was getting more panicked by the minute. She hadn’t heard Zavian’s cry and had no idea he was trying to help her. She was so confused and hurt and panicked and angry she almost started crying.
Jay hadn't heard Zavian either, maybe he would have closed the door. Instead, he just pressed ger against the wall, his grip still tight on her wrist, his other found her other one as he pinned her to the wall. "Because, Zave needs to learn a lesson." He moved his face an inch away from hers, feeling her paniced breath on his face.
Zavian ran into the room, fear still coursing through his entire body. "JAY!!" He pulled his off of her. "WHAT THE @#$& DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!" It wasn't fear, it was anger.
Fern's eyes widened, her heart beating erratically in her chest. Her face was definitely red, and she had to blink away tears, her eyes burning. She looked at Zavian with relief. He had saved her. Of course, it was his best friend that had got her into this whole situation, but she was relieved anyway. She moved away from Jay, shaking slightly with all of the emotions that she felt.
He yelled louder at Jay. How could he treat anyone, especially her, like that? Jay shot back at him. "If you weren't going to have her, I decided I would." "SHE'S NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN JUST HAVE, JAY!" Jay seemed to back off, glancing towards Fern, satisfied with the damage done to the both of them. "And you think you're any better than I am, Zave?" He scoffed and walked out of the room, leaving it at that. He glared at his as he walked away, but he couldn't help but wonder if he was right.
Fern watched him go, not even realizing that she had started to cry. A couple of tears slipped down her face before she had noticed anything was happening. She didn't move from her position near the wall, wondering what Zavian was going to do next.
Zavian looked to Fern to see yet crying with a fearful look in her eyes as she stared as him. Something broke inside him. He walked up to her, not too close, unsure how she would react if he got to close, taking her hand gently is his. "Are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
She let him, sniffling for a moment before answering. "No, he didn't hurt me," she said. "But that was still scary. Does he really think of girls as something you just have, like a t-shirt that you wear and then discard?" She wasn't scared anymore, but she was still upset and deliberately avoided his first question, hoping that he wouldn't notice.
He sighed. "Yeah." Zavian had always hoped it would fade, but Jay still the same after years. A few moments of silence passed as he thought for a moment. "It's fine if you're not. Okay, that is. I don't think you should be after that. But I don't want you to stay not okay. What can I do?" He wasn't sure if he could do anything, or if she'd let him, but he couldn't just stand there as she seemed to fall apart around the edges.
After a couple of tense moments, she flung her arms around him and cried some more. "Thank you," she whispered between sobs. She buried her head in his shoulder.
Nevermind. "Shhhh…" He wrapped his arms around her, surrounding her and bringing her close to his chest. "I'm sorry," he whispered so she couldn't hear.
She continued to cry for a little bit, before settling down. For a few moments she didn’t say anything, before pulling back a little bit and seeing the teardrops she had left on his shirt. She laughed. “Sorry, but your sleeve is kind of a mess now,” she commented, trying to lighten things a little.
