"Alright," Reese replied. They'd thrown stones at my legs. She gasped suddenly. Sharp stones. That cut.
"Alright," Reese replied. They'd thrown stones at my legs. She gasped suddenly. Sharp stones. That cut.
"Reese? What's wrong?"
My legs were bleeding, but I didn't go to the nurse. Reese clung tightly to A and squeezed her eyes shut. "Barbie doll!" they yelled at me. "You're too perfect!" The rocks cut my arms. She whimpered.
"Reese! Sweetheart, what is it?" A. shifted, holding her tightly and looking down at her, confused and worried. "I need you to talk to me, love."
Reese was breathing quickly and heavily. Her chest was tight. The next rock cut my face. I ran after that. But they didn't stop throwing the sharp rocks.
"Fuck. Reese, I want you to try and focus on my voice, okay? Just-listen to me. Focus on me."
"A," she said quietly. I got blood on my socks. My mother was upset. They were perfectly good white socks.
"Hey, hey. It's okay. Just me and you, right here, on your couch, alright? Just us. You're okay."
She gasped again, suddenly back. She trembled and pressed against A.
A. hummed soothingly as she kissed the top of her head, hugging her tighter.
"A, I think I just got PTSD or something," she whispered shakily.
"You really think so? Do I need to take you to go see someone?"
"No!" she cried quickly.
"Woah, alright, alright." She said softly, nodding. "We wont go anywhere then I'm just a bit worried, okay?"
She nodded, burrowing her face into A's shoulder. She still trembled.
"If you want, you can talk to me. If not, I can just be here." She resumed humming, fingers tracing circles on Reese's back in a soothing repetitive motion."
She tried to regulate her breathing. "I-I want to talk, but I d-don't know how…"
"Did something I said trigger it? That might be a good place to start."
"Did something I said trigger it? That might be a good place to start."
Reese swallowed. "Barbie," she admitted.
"Noted. Can I ask what about it? You don't have to answer."
"I-I want to tell you… just… not right now…"
She nodded, continuing to just hold Reese as she lapsed into silence.
Eventually, her breathing slowed and she calmed down.
"You alright?"
"Yes," she said softly.
