"I know and it is fine kale."
"I know and it is fine kale."
"….You almost never say my name, are you alright?" Kale smirked, resting their head back on Jay's shoulder.
"yeah. I'm fine. What about you." Jay responded.
"When I'm with you I could never be better." Kale shrugged, staring out at the bright flowers, watching them sway in the breeze.
"mhm." Jay said and closed his eyes.
Time passed and the sun started setting. "You ready to go back? We could stay out here if you really wanted.."
"we could go back " Jay replied.
"Alright!" Kale jumped up, pulling Jay with them. They held Jay's hand tightly, guiding him back through the field and back to the care home. When they opened the door, Wendy and Chris were at the bottom of the stairs with worried expressions. They were muttering something to each other until they saw Kale and Jay at the door.
"Where on earth were you two?" Wendy cried. "We were worried sick, we didn't know what had happened to you or if you were hurt."
"We went to visit our friend at the hospital." Kale shrugged, not understanding what all the fuss was about.
"Well you're back now, just in time for dinner too." Chris sighed, ushering the two of them into the dining room. Everything fell silent as they sat down, with a couple of the other boys giving Kale a suspicious once over. Kale ignored them and started eating.
Jay was confused by the whole interaction but sat down anyway. He sat and started eating the food that was in front of him. Though he was a bit suspicious of those people.
(bump)
Kale kept their head low while they ate, listening in on every other conversation at the table. Some of the girls were talking about a video game series, some of the boys were talking about a new zombie book that was about to be released. But the guy from the window, the guy he met on the first night, also stayed silent, and Kale caught him looking at them more than once - even if only for a fleeting moment.
(I would write but nothing is happening with Jordan)
"something wrong?" Jay asked Kale out of nowhere as he ate his food also.
"No.." Kale hesitantly replied, slowly reaching down to pat Jay's leg. "No, everything is fine. Are you okay?"
"yeah. I'm fine." He replied and continued to eat some food.
"Good." Kale squeezed Jay's leg gently before letting go and turning back to his food. He couldn't wait to be shown to his new room, he was exhausted..
Jay nodded then ate his food and finished not that long after. Soon enough Wendy and Chris approched them and the other two people.
Bump?
Wendy and Chris explained that all their rooms had been sorted, and set about escorting them to them. Kale sighed quietly, running their fingers through their hair as they entered their room across the hall from Jay's. It was a fairly spacious room that was in some dire need of colour, but Kale would fix that eventually. "This is going to be weird.. Sleeping in a room alone.."
Jay got into his room then shut the door. He had no idea where anything was in the room. He stepped forward then tripped on the carpet and fell down with a thud.
Kale heard a thud from across the hall, and their natural response was to run straight to it, knowing that Jay had fallen. But Kale held themselves back. "He's stronger than he looks.. He doesn't need me mothering him."
Jay shook his head and pushed himself up. He walked across the room and found the bed and sat down sighing.
Kale strode across the room to the bed, slowly sitting down on it. They whistled low, amazed by the softness of the mattress. They laid down on their back, sighing happily. "It's a lot nicer than the beds at Lone Pines.."
They rolled onto their front, closing their eyes, and before they knew it they'd fallen asleep.
Jay sat awake in his bed for hours. He wasn't sure when he fell asleep. All he knew was that when he did wake up he hadn't been asleep long.
A knock at the door in the middle of the night awoke Kale. They fumbled around, changing into more comfortable clothing, before swinging the bedroom door open with a yawn. When they opened their eyes, they saw the boy from earlier rubbing the top of his arm.
"You again? What the hell do you want?" Kale's voice was deep, and their words were a little slurred.
"I have a name y'know, it's Austin." the boy frowned. "Can I come in?"
Kale stepped aside with a exasperated huff. Once Austin was in the room, Kale closed the door and rubbed his face. "Why are you here? Do you know what time it is?"
"It's roughly two in the morning." Austin shrugged, sitting down on the edge of Kale's bed. "I couldn't sleep."
Kale closed their eyes, silently counting to five in their head. They were too tired for this. "Is something on your mind?"
"I wanted to apologise." Austin kept his eyes on the floor, still rubbing the top of his arm. "I haven't exactly been the most welcoming to you or Jay since the two of you arrived."
Kale scowled, running their fingers through their hair. "And this couldn't have waited until morning???"
"Hey just be thankful that I'm even bothering to do this now, I could quite easily not say what's on my mind." This time he actually looked at Kale, though his eyes were filled with worry. "Besides, I have a reputation to uphold, I don't want others to think I'm soft."
"Fine, whatever." Kale yawned, plopping down beside Austin. "Is that all you're here for? Because I'd like to go back to sleep."
"I was also going to ask if I could be your friend."
Kale rose their hand to their head as if they had a migraine. "Why? I don't even know you."
"I…" Austin paused, as if debating whether or not to answer Kale's question. "I see the kind of bond that you have with Jay, the some of the other kids have with each other, and while I have closed myself to friendship with the others, I was hoping that I could try with you. It sounds stupid when I say it like that…"
"No, it's fine, just next time you want to make friends with someone, don't wake them up at two in the morning." A small, tired smile curved on Kale's lips. "Now go on, go back to bed. I'll see you at breakfast, if I'm not asleep."
Austin nodded with a shy smile and quickly left the room, mumbling a 'thank you' to Kale as the door closed. Kale fell back on the bed, groaning as they forced themselves back to sleep.
Kale woke up in the morning and didn't particularly want to move. They laid there, staring at the ceiling with their arm across their forehead. Did I really get woken up by someone wanting to be my friend? What a weird kid..
