The stones were starting to crack and they were concerned about the structural integrity. Better to work on repairing it now rather than waiting for it to collapse on people inside.
The French have been raising money to help keep it in good care for a while now. And now President Macron is launching an international campaign to help fundraise, because the french gov didn't have enough offhand to dedicate to the monument.
They don't even know that the renovation was what caused the fire. They're gonna launch an investigation.

Man, this year is going downhill fast it seems.

Many good things have happened this year as well, we can't lose hope! We may have lost some structures and had some questionable laws put in place, but that doesn't mean we haven't been improving as well! We've gone downhill in some ways and uphill in others, which is completely normal. This year isn't completely bad yet, we have to give it some time.
